Viterbi IT is pleased to announce the availability of a new cloud storage service.
Key Points:
Storage for your business documents that is accessible anywhere, anytime on a variety of end devices.
Provide functionality similar to commercial cloud storage applications such as DropBox, Box.Net or SugarSync but with your data residing on Viterbi IT’s servers here on campus and replicated to the Viterbi School’s disaster recovery site.
Data is encrypted during transit and at rest.
Available for Windows, Mac OSX, Apple iOS and Android operating systems.
Provided at no cost to tenure/tenure-track faculty, full time teaching faculty (with titles of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor of Engineering Practice, or Professor of Engineering Practice) and staff in the departments Viterbi IT supports.

6/25/12 - Dell KACE - Computer Update and Patch Management
Dear User,
In an effort to ensure that your computer’s OS and applications are patched and updated regularly, Viterbi IT has acquired a new application called Dell KACE. The application has been (or will be) installed on staff computers that are supported by Viterbi IT. This application will provide the following benefits:
• More timely update and patching of the operating system such as Windows and OSX.
• More timely update and patching of various applications such as Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader.
• Viterbi IT technicians will not need to make a visit to update and patch your computer’s operating system and various supported applications (see link at the end of this email).
• Cut down on vulnerabilities to malware and viruses.

4/25/12 - Viterbi IT Offices will be relocated from OHE330 to PHE333 from 5/8/12 to 8/3/12.
OHE will be going through a seismic retrofit during the summer. Viterbi IT will be operating out of PHE333 until the retrofit is completed.

Mathematica is a fully integrated software environment for technical and scientific computing. It combines numerical and symbolic computation, visualization, and programming in a single, flexible interactive software system.
This email is to remind you that USC has site license for Mathematica software. It can be installed on university-owned computers for use by USC students, faculty and staff. Additionally, faculty and staff may install the software on personally-owned computers.
For university-owned computers, the installation file is available at http://software.usc.edu/. Go there, select the appropriate OS platform, look for Mathematica (Office/Classroom).

10/12/11 - Using USC NetID for ITP Classrooms
Beginning with this semester, ITP students were able to use their USC NetID to login to Viterbi RDSFarm (formerly known as ITP Virtual Lab). Viterbi IT also added support for roaming user profile and network storage space for students.
The benefits to the students are:
1. Students won’t have to remember another account as their USC NetID credentials will get them access to the RDSFarm (a farm of RDS servers).
2. 1GB of network storage space is provided to each student. This reduces their reliance on USB flash drives (or other means of storage). Nonetheless, students are still advised to save backup copies of files on their own USB flash drives for further data protection.
3. The RDSfarm server farm automatically load balances connections by students to enhance service availability. With roaming profile, students will see the same environment regardless of which server they are on. This means that Desktop and files saved to the network storage will follow them across RDS sessions.
Viterbi IT is pleased to announce that ITP students can soon use their USC NetID login in ITP classrooms. The above benefits will be extended to the ITP classrooms (except in OHE406 which has a unique set up). This will be done incrementally starting with OHE542 on Monday, 10/17/11. Once USC NetID login is enabled in all the ITP classrooms, the student could go into the ITP classrooms, log in to any computer and get the same roaming profile with network storage space. Please note that what they see on OS X and Windows will be slightly different for obvious reasons.
Changes in the ITP classroom computers:
1. For USC NetID login, students will need to login with domain suffix @ISD.USC.EDU after their USC NetID username. Note the use of ISD.USC.EDU is case-sensitive.
For example,
Username: ttrojan@ISD.USC.EDU
Password: {USC NetID password}
2. Students, faculty and guests may continue to login to the ITP classroom computers with the standard “itp” account with no password. For Mac login, users can simply type “itp” for username and no password. For Windows login, user should type “computername\itp” for username and no password. There will be a label on the computer and flat panel for easy user reference of what the computer name is. So, for faculty and students who do not want or need to utilize network storage space and roaming profile, they do not have to login with their USC NetID.
8/19/11 - Secure FTP Server for Distributing Electronic Course Material
Dear Viterbi Faculty,
I am pleased to announce that we now have a secure FTP server available for you to distribute electronic course materials of large file size to your students.
Many of you have requested such resource so you could do away with distributing instructional software via CDs/DVDs. That day has come. With this resource, your students can use any SFTP client program to access the server. Fetch (for Mac) and FileZilla (for Windows) are two SFTP client programs available on USC Software site, http://software.usc.edu.
If you have a need to use this resource, please submit a service request at http://viterbi.usc.edu/servicedesk with the following information:
* Course number
* Section number
* Estimated storage required to host the files.
This resource is strictly meant for instructional support. Each request will be reviewed to determine eligibility. Once approved, two separate accounts along with the instructions for server access will be communicated to you. One account will be used to upload files to the server. The other account will be used by your students to download the files you are distributing.
All files and user accounts will be purged at the end of the semester.
